Your 6-Day Finland Winter Journey

Your 6-Day Finland Winter Journey

Welcome to Finnish Lapland.

Destination: Rovaniemi, Finnish Lapland
Duration: 6 days / 5 nights
Best season: December to March
Ideal for: Couples, families, honeymooners and adventure travelers

Day 1 — Welcome to the Arctic

Arrive in Rovaniemi, the gateway to Finnish Lapland.

After your airport transfer and hotel check-in, keep the first day relaxed. Take a walk through the snowy city, stop at a Finnish café for coffee or hot chocolate and enjoy your first glimpse of the Arctic landscape.

In the evening, you can join a Northern Lights tour. The aurora is a natural phenomenon, so sightings can never be guaranteed, but clear skies and darkness create the opportunity to experience one of the world’s most spectacular natural displays.

Overnight: Rovaniemi hotel

Day 2 — Santa Claus Village & the Arctic Circle

After breakfast, head to Santa Claus Village, one of Rovaniemi’s best-known attractions.

Cross the Arctic Circle, meet Santa Claus and explore the snowy surroundings. Even outside the Christmas season, the landscape gives the village a distinctly Arctic atmosphere.

Later, return to Rovaniemi and enjoy a relaxed evening.

If the skies are clear, head out again for an evening Northern Lights experience.

Overnight: Rovaniemi hotel

Day 3 — Husky Sledding Through the Snow

Today is all about adventure.

Head into the snowy forests for a husky sledding experience. With a team of energetic huskies pulling your sled through the winter landscape, you’ll experience Lapland from a completely different perspective.

After the ride, warm up with a hot drink before returning to the city.

In the evening, make time for a traditional Finnish sauna – one of the country’s most important cultural experiences.

Overnight: Rovaniemi hotel

Day 4 — Reindeer & Snowmobile Adventure

Start the day with a visit to a local reindeer farm.

Reindeer are closely associated with Lapland, and a guided farm visit offers an opportunity to learn about the animals and the region’s traditions before enjoying a reindeer sleigh ride through the snow.

Later, turn up the speed with a snowmobile safari.

Ride through snow-covered forests and across frozen landscapes before stopping for a warm drink around a campfire.

Overnight: Rovaniemi hotel

Day 5 — Your Glass Igloo Experience

This is the night you’ve been waiting for.

Leave the city and check into a glass igloo surrounded by the snowy Arctic landscape.

The concept is wonderfully simple: stay warm and comfortable while keeping the winter sky above you.

After dinner, turn off the lights, settle into bed and look upward.

If the weather and aurora conditions cooperate, the Northern Lights may appear above your glass roof.

Even without the aurora, sleeping beneath a dark Arctic sky surrounded by snow is an experience in itself.

Overnight: Glass igloo

Day 6 — A Slow Arctic Morning

Wake up slowly and enjoy your final breakfast in Lapland.

Take one last walk through the snow, enjoy a final Finnish coffee and prepare for your airport transfer.

You leave Finland with photographs, souvenirs and memories of huskies, reindeer, snowy forests and perhaps – if nature was on your side – the Northern Lights.

What to Pack for Finland in Winter

Finnish Lapland can become extremely cold, so packing correctly is essential.

Bring:

  • Thermal base layers
  • Fleece or wool sweaters
  • Insulated winter jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Warm winter boots
  • Wool socks
  • Thermal gloves
  • Warm hat
  • Scarf or neck warmer
  • Hand warmers
  • Moisturizer and lip balm
  • Sunglasses
  • Power bank
  • Camera and spare batteries

The secret is layering. Several warm layers allow you to adjust your clothing as temperatures and activity levels change.

When Should You Visit?

December – Christmas atmosphere, Santa Claus Village and deep winter.

January – Snowy Arctic landscapes and a true winter experience, with potentially very cold temperatures.

February – Plenty of snow combined with gradually increasing daylight.

March – Snow remains abundant while daylight hours become longer, making it attractive for outdoor activities.

The Northern Lights season generally runs from autumn through early spring, although sightings are never guaranteed.

What to Eat in Finland

Your Arctic adventure should include Finnish food as well.

Try:

Fresh salmon – a Nordic classic.

Reindeer – a traditional Lapland specialty.

Finnish pastries – perfect with coffee.

Berry-based dishes – Finland’s forests are rich in berries.

Warm soups – particularly welcome after a day outdoors.

And don’t leave without experiencing a Finnish coffee break and sauna.

The Arctic Story You’ll Take Home

Finland is not simply a place to go looking for the Northern Lights.

It is the silence of a snow-covered forest.

The sound of huskies running through fresh snow.

A reindeer sleigh moving slowly through the Arctic landscape.

The warmth of a sauna after hours outside in the cold.

And finally, lying beneath the glass roof of your igloo, looking into the endless northern sky.

Maybe the aurora will appear.

Maybe it won’t.

But either way, you’ll have experienced something rare: a place where winter is not something to escape from.

It is the reason to come.
